VAC Has Changed Their Process

As many of you are aware we have been advocating for changes to VAC processes for some time.  You can review some of our activities here - Our Recent Activity

As a result of our advocacy VAC has changed their procedures regarding Red-Zones as of 01 Jan 2025. Now, all veterans with active cancers who file claims will be automatically Red-Zoned upon disclosing their active cancer.  This will fast-track them through the system. As well they will be receive assistance to help them understand exactly what they need to be successful.

What criteria is needed in order to have a claim Red Zoned?

One of the following criteria must be met in order to Red Zone a claim:

bullet

Medically at risk

bullet

Advanced Age (Over 80)

bullet

Palliative

bullet

Unmet health needs

bullet

Claims for Severe Cancer (if one or more criteria listed below is met)

Claims for Severe Cancer (one or more of the following criteria must be met):

Severe cancer refers to a stage or condition of cancer that is characterized by significant progression and impact on the body. It can be similar to advanced cancer, but with an emphasis on the severity of symptoms, the extent of disease, and its impact on the individual’s health.

bullet

Extensive tumor growth which may cause obstruction, pain, or damage to surrounding organs and tissues

bullet

Metastasis meaning it has spread to other parts of the body

bullet

Inoperability meaning that surgical removal of the tumor is no longer an option due to its size, location, or widespread nature

bullet

Treatment actively receiving conventional treatment for severe cancer or experiencing resistance to conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy

bullet

Severe symptoms such as severe pain, weight loss, extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing, and organ dysfunction

bullet

Rapid progression meaning it spreads or worsens in a short amount of time, leading to a decline in health

bullet

End-Stage disease where curative treatment is no longer an option.

If you already have a claim in the system and have an active cancer you MUST ask to be Red-Zoned

It is strongly recommended that if you are already in the system
and have an Active Cancer that you request to be Red-Zoned.
